Boating Safety Tips
- Always wear your Personal Flotation Device (PFD) when onboard a boat. All children on all boats under the age of 12 in PA must always wear a PFD.
- Keep clear of swimmers and designated swimming areas.
- Alcohol is involved in over 50% of all boating fatalities - DON'T DRINK WHILE BOATING!
- Check and heed weather forecasts before boating.
- Always carry a fire extinguisher and make sure it is fully charged.
- Always carry a fresh supply of flares to use in case of an emergency.
- Do not overload the boat.
- Avoid horseplay.
- Take the PA Boaters Safety Course online.
Swimming Safety Tips
- Never swim alone. Always swim with a buddy.
- Avoid swimming in cold water for long periods of time.
- Never go swimming when it is storming and lightning.
- Learn water rescue techniques.
- Learn to swim.
- Never dive into shallow water.
- Learn CPR (cardio-pulmonary resuscitation).
